WHAT TO PLANT ?

Mention bulbs..........

and most people think of daffodils or jonquils, but the range of bulbous plants extends far beyond those pretty flowers.
While tulips, hyacinths and snowdrops also belong with the 'true' bulb family, there are many flowers that have corms, rhizomes or tubers. These include agapanthus and hippeastrums, dahlias, cannas and other lilies, irises, begonias, anemones and amaryllis, to name just a few.

Not only do bulbs do the work of reproducing the plant, they store food for those months when the leaves die and the plant is dormant. Thus, when the conditions are right the new plant has all it needs to thrust new shoots up into the sunlight.

Most bulbs need moist, rich, free draining soil and a sunny position to grow happily. Many flower in the spring, but such is their diversity, it is possible to have bulbs flowering in every month of the year.

To grow bulbs such as tulips in a temperate region, keep them in the refrigerator for four to eight weeks before planting out at the coldest time of year. In cold ares, plant in late autumn. Tulips like warm, dry summers alkaline soil. They may be affected by aphids, or a fungal condition called 'tulip fire' if there is too much moisture about. Their vibrant colors make them well worth a place in the garden.
Bulbs will usually do well if their natural habitat is approximated in the garden. For instance, daffodils are meadow flowers, so like plenty of sun. They will naturalize successfully in the lawn and flower early before the grass becomes too competitive. It's best not to mow for at least six weeks after the flowers die, because the leaves provide food to the bulb for next years' growth.

Woodland bulbs like bluebells and snowdrops will do better in a semi-shaded or a dappled sun position. They do well under deciduous trees. Spring-flowering bulbs may be planted near a well-used path or where they can be seen from a window to save trekking over soggy lawns to admire them.

Most bulbs can be grown successfully in containers, but need at least four inches ((10 cm)) of soil below them and 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) above. It's a good idea to plant bulbs in a pot and bury it in the garden to prevent them from being accidentally hoed during a weeding session. If you have trouble with rodents eating your bulbs, plant them inside a wire cage buried in the garden.

Daffodils, or narcissus, are easy to grow and most tolerate at least light frosts. There are many varieties and all are beautiful, but nurseries tend to only stock the most common kinds. Mail order specialist nurseries are where to find the more unusual of these beauties. Colors vary from white through cream to yellow and some even have pale pink trumpets, so it's well worth the extra trouble to seek them out. They grow so fast………..what do I need next week? What should you plant in your windowbox? We won't say the sky's the limit, since you'll want to choose plants of relatively small stature. But a windowbox is nothing if not an invitation to experiment. Micro vegitables and your are fantastic to grow on a windowsill. You can see day by day how they are doing and they are so attractive.

Try classic petunias, geraniums, dwarf dahlias or miniature roses all by themselves.
Go for dramatic foliage effects with sweet potato vine in chartreuse this will grow f a s t or deep maroon, colorful coleus, velvety silver plectranthus, purple Persian shield (Strobilanthes) or golden creeping Jenny (Lysimachia).

For cool summer color, use pale yellow marigolds and petunias with chartreuse lysimachia and creamy white sutera (formerly Bacopa), accented with pink or purple million bells (Calibrachoa).

For a warm combo, try the small, upright fuchsia 'Gartenmeister Bonstet' with million bells 'Terra Cotta' and Diascia 'Red Start.'
Combine spiky annual Salvia farinacea with rose, pink and white petunias, dressed with a frill of white sweet alyssum.

In shade

Pair red impatiens with blue fan flower, or white impatiens with deep "black" coleus.

Try rosy tuberous begonias with pink impatiens and white or purple trailing nemesia.

Use variegated caladiums with small hostas, hardy cyclamens, trailing vinca and ferns.

Combine variegated heuchera in purple tones with ajuga 'Burgundy Glow,' variegated ivy 'Goldheart,' and white daisy-like argyranthemum.

*Use impatiens in mixed colors with Hypoestes 'Pink Splash,' asparagus fern and spiky dracena.

For a formal look: Paint windowboxes the same color as the house. Fill them with dwarf evergreens and boxwood, trim with ivy.

For an informal setting: Use a rustic windowbox, planted with old-fashioned flowers like nasturtiums, annual phlox, marguerite daisies and trailing nemesia.
For a summer cottage: Try 'Elf' miniature sunflowers or pink and red geraniums.
For a Victorian home: Use variegated coleus, large-flowered begonias, Boston ferns and bright impatiens.

For a modern house: Try dramatic shapes like those of New Zealand flax (Phormium), ornamental grasses, big-leaf begonias or cacti and succulents.

A hydroponic windowbox for every purpose

For a kitchen

In sun, plant creeping thyme, parsley, rosemary, sage, oregano, chives and marjoram.

In shade, use lemon balm, mint, sorrel, parsley and sweet woodruff.

For fragrance Try sweet alyssum lavender, pinks, heliotrope, dwarf nicotiana, scented geraniums and.

To attract butterflies

Use verbena, lantana, dwarf lobelias, lavender, scabiosa, small sedums and salvias.

*Try daisy-like yellow osteospermum with white verbena, blue torenia and golden creeping Jenny.

Schemes for other seasons:

In spring: Combine pansies with tulips or miniature daffodils with primroses.

In autumn: Decorate with cut branches of berried pyracanthas, cut hydrangea blossoms, grasses and wheat sheaves, small pumpkins or gourds.

In winter: Drape hydroponic windowboxes with evergreen boughs, holly branches, pine cones and ivy; or arrange interesting bare branches and trim with tiny white lights.

Exploring the Many Available Jobs in Criminology

With a criminology degree, there are a number of career paths available for the individual. Individuals that have just graduated are likely to get involved in these particular careers. These are some of the more flexible career fields when it comes to individuals who are educated by whom may not have the experience that some other employment offices may desire. In addition, these jobs are interesting and allow the individual to learn and explore aspects that they were not able to while in school. The hands on experience will help the graduate in many ways later on in their careers as well as at the time of their employment. One of these exciting careers is in the field of crime intelligence analysis. This is a very interesting field for individuals that are looking to have experience when it comes to deciphering the foundation of crimes.

Some other creative careers when it comes to criminology employment opportunities would go on to include consumer advocates, who work with laws and regulations that would either benefit or protect the average consumer from the manufacturers or corporations, environment protection analysts, who help to formulate different regulations when it comes to the environment and the protection that it can receive from the public and community members at large, and a regional crime prevention coordinator, who would be in charge of coming up with different methods in which to protect the residents in a region of the state. This is a position that would also help to come up with ways in which the community crime prevention members would be organized and structured in order to provide a more effective and efficient crime task force within the region. As a result, this career is very important when it comes to preventing crime within the region by understanding some of the underlying pressures and structures of the criminal element within the society or culture.

One of the most obvious career opportunities that exists for individuals that graduate with a criminology degree would be that of those who go on to become police officers. This can extend into other fields of the police department including detectives and criminal psychologists on the payroll of the police department. In this area, many people are able to come together in order to look at how society and crime interacts on an intimate level.

The crimes that take place are not looked at and analyzed in order to come up with ways to prevent the crime in the area, rather the police force is able to catch the criminals and hopefully take them out of the society in which they were raised or committing the crimes. In some cases, the police officers are able to work and interact with the regional crime coordinator, in order to create a more solidified union of crime prevention within the region, city or town. There are some other cases in which the police officers will interact with community correction officers, either because they are employed in jails where the criminals are required to serve their time or as parole or probation officers who are able to readjust the criminal to the society in which they live or to make sure that they are not violating any rules or restrictions that have been placed on them.
